Is Soil Disturbance Always Bad?

There’s a lot of conversation in agriculture about reducing soil disturbance—and for good reason. Protecting soil structure and biological function matters. But potato production requires more nuance.

Seedbed preparation, planting, hilling and harvest all move soil. So rather than asking, “How can I disturb the soil less?” consider a better question:

Is the disturbance helping the field become more productive—or leaving it less capable of supporting the crop?

Make Every Pass Earn Its Place

Eliminating a pass doesn’t necessarily improve the system. Sometimes that pass addresses a constraint, such as compaction or soilborne disease, that is already limiting crop performance.

What matters is how well the system recovers afterward.

When a potato crop establishes quickly and develops strong roots, it captures energy and directs carbon back into the soil, supporting biological activity and soil function. Disease pressure can compromise that process.

Where Soil Fumigation Fits

Soil fumigation is a disturbance, but the story doesn’t end with the application.

When a soil fumigant such as Strike™ helps manage damaging soilborne disease, it can give the crop an opportunity to establish more successfully. A healthier crop can develop stronger roots, capture more energy and return more carbon to the soil.

That’s why a management practice should be evaluated not only by the disturbance it creates, but by what the crop and soil are able to do afterward.

In potato production, the objective should be purposeful disturbance followed by strong recovery.

The question isn’t simply, “Did we disturb the soil?” It’s, “What did that disturbance allow the field to do next?”
